33rd World Worm Charming Championship

I went to the ‘33rd World Worm Charming Championship’ - http://www.wormcharming.com/ - earlier this afternoon (Sat 23/6/12) within the grounds of Willaston Primary School, Willaston, near Nantwich, Cheshire. The Championship started at 2pm and participants in each of the 144 plots had 30 minutes to vibrate as many worms as possible from their 3x3 metre plot. This year, for the first time, there were two types of plots available. The traditional type of plot for teams of two and a 'tag-team' plot for teams who wished to change their pairings throughout the charming period. The championships included representatives from the Philippines, Thailand, Australia and Holland.

The Youngest wormer award was won by four-week old Evie May Benbow, who is also the granddaughter of event organiser Mike Forster. The Heaviest worm trophy was won by Carol Owen at 5.62g. The Championship trophy for Most Worms was won by the 'Caravan club' tag team with 419 worms. The team was made up of members from Northwich and Ashton-in-Makerfield. Mike Forster was given an honorary Scouting neckerchief by the 26th Willaston Scouts for his long standing support of the championships. The most visible entry was Jonathan Perkins from Wales, who was in Nantwich with four friends (Paul Hallam, David Lamper, Chris Brooks, Tim Stock) on a Stag Weekend prior to his marriage later this year. Jonathan wore a 'Zippy' costume from the children's television programme Rainbow.

Other events included the Willaston School Percussion Band on the playground and the Cheshire Academy of Rhythmic Gymnastics in the arena on the school field. The arena and adjacent areas were surrounded by charity stalls and food and drink outlets.

Fortunately, the rain stayed away all afternoon and was enjoyed by several hundred people.

See attached the photos I took at the event. All photos by Jonathan White.
